Acne: an overview of its mechanisms

Each skin pore has a small opening called the follicle, which produces an oily substance called sebum, whose aim is to lubricate the hair and create a natural barrier for the skin against outside aggressions such as pollution and extreme temperatures.

When these follicules produce too much sebum, the pores get clogged, and a bacteria called propionibacterium acnes develops, leading to all sorts of nuisances such as inflammation, blemishes, whiteheads, blackheads and so on. Who wouldn’t want to get rid of acne fast?

The problem of not treating acne

Although people who have a less than moderate case of acne tend to prefer to ignore it or at least leave it alone as best as they can, hoping it will soon go away on its own, there can be a few complications that should convince you it’s better to seek out a treatment on order to get rid of acne fast.

Indeed one of these complications is the permanent scarring of tissues. Although acne is a transitory skin condition, the longer it marks your face the more chance you’ll have of developing scars which may or may not fade away!

Moreover some forms of acne tend to generate cysts that sometimes need to be surgically removed.

Furthermore, acne sufferers have a greater tendency to touch their face, which has been correlated with the appearance of extremely dangerous infectious agents, such as staphylococcus.

So there are many reasons why it is necessary to get rid of acne fast.

The social and psychological impact:

A 2007 study (Pawin et al 2007) has clearly evidenced the link between acne and poor self-image, especially for adolescents. The survey of peoplo between the ages of 12 and 25 showed that those who had a severe case of acne were 3 times more likely to feel shameful, aggressive or sad. Among this group, 67% said that their social life has been adversly affected and 44% say that it had turned into an obsession: they wanted to get rid of acne fast.

Some causes

Acne is a very complex disease, as it tends to appear not simply for one reason  but often because of a combination of a few factors.

- The “mundane factor” deals with diet, hygiene and living conditions. Heat, excessive sweating and oily cosmetics have some degree of responsibility in aggravating acne. Although it has long been known that lack of good hygiene does not cause acne, it has been shown to aggravate it due to infection. On the other hand, diet and the implication of food choices on the appearance, the evolution and the severity of the conditionremains a controversial issue. Some scientists, such as those researching the so-called “paleo diet”, think that processed or modern food is the one and only cause of acne.

- The “genetic factor”: It has been shown that the risk of developing a severe case of acne are higher in a patient whose parents had a biological predisposition of acne. This “genetic factor” also affects the way a patient will react to any given treatment, and if they can get rid of acne fast.

- The “hormonal factor”: We already know that androgens are partly responsible for the excess of sebum production, which explains why acne affects adolescents. Yet acne can also affect people whenever hormones are out of balance, namely during pregnancy, periods – 78% of women between 25 and 40 presenting acne linked it to premenstrual syndrome in a 2002 study (Poli at al 2002) – and at times of high stress.
